Our wedding date was set based on the 2004 race schedule. A checkered flag hangs from our porch to honor major races. One whole room of our house is dedicated to the sport. Yet, surprisingly it took us nearly two years to get Hudson to see a race. As it should be, Josh took Hudson to his first race alone in Bloomington earlier this year. I am happy they had that father & son moment. Last weekend we had our first family racing affair as we attended little man's first King's Royal.
This race holds special esteem in Josh's heart. It is at his favorite dirt track and of the 26 royals, Josh has been to all but two. (He missed one to accompany me on our honeymoon. That, folks, is love.)
Hudson found the whole night rather hot, boring, and confining. But who could blame him? It took me forever to understand the technicalities of sprint car racing. Plus, the only race car driver Hudson has ever given a hoot about is Handy Manny in that one Disney Channel special. He did get a new shirt and hat out of the deal. And as much junk food as I could find. (Healthy food is not track-worthy.)
I am confident that little man will grow to respect racing. And maybe track owner Tony Stewart will heed my request that Elmo sing the national anthem at next year's race.
